(22 February 2011) Australia’s first Social Housing project to be awarded a 5 star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia has just opened in Lilyfield, NSW.

Project managed by Coffey International (“Coffey”) subsidiary Coffey Projects, the Lilyfield redevelopment represents groundbreaking innovation and sets a new standard for public housing in Australia for residents, the local community and the environment, achieved in a cost effective way.

According to Coffey Project Manager Peter Le May, “The Lilyfield development represents groundbreaking design and demonstrates that affordable green housing is achievable. This cost-effective green star residential development will provide on-going cost savings and environmental benefits for both the tenants and the owners.”

The environmentally sustainable design has incorporated features such as natural ventilation, recycled water and solar hot water and power into the housing estate. As well as providing environmental benefits, residents will welcome the lower energy and water bills these measures will provide.

Outdoor lighting is an area that the project has achieved significant cost and energy savings. In common areas, motion sensors are used to minimise unnecessary energy use. It has been designed to ensure that lighting is used efficiently – being directed at where it is needed, rather than to the night sky.

Reliance on cars is minimised, with off-street parking replaced by secure bicycle parking for residents and visitors. The housing estate is also in close proximity to public transport.

Creating an environmentally friendly development that also provides residents with a sense of identity and dignity has also been at the core of the project. With this in mind, a communal vegetable garden, central courtyard and BBQ area have been incorporated into the design.

The Lilyfield Social Housing Project consists of 88 architecturally designed units, nine of which feature disability access features.

Coffey was also involved in the project management and development of Worldpark in Adelaide – a visionary business environment that is both people and environmentally friendly. The first green business park in Adelaide, it has achieved a 5 Star Green Star Office Design rating.
