Coffey wins top prize at 2009 ACEA Awards for Excellence

(9 December 2009) Global professional services consultancy Coffey International Limited (“Coffey”) has won the Project of the Year Award at the 2009 Association of Consulting Engineers Australia (ACEA) Awards for Excellence, for the Inner Northern Busway - Queen Street to Upper Roma Street Project in Brisbane, Australia, announced at an annual dinner in Brisbane last Friday evening. This project also received a Gold Award in the Transport & Civil Infrastructure category.

Coffey Geotechnics and AECOM, on behalf of the INB Hub Alliance, were recognised for their respective contribution as geotechnical consultants and engineering design services provider, for the A$333 million project completed in 2008 for the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The annual awards recognise outstanding achievement by ACEA Member Firms and provide the opportunity for firms to demonstrate the design skills and technical excellence of their professional staff in project and service delivery.

Another Coffey business, Coffey International Development, also received a Silver Award of Merit in the International Export Projects category for their work as managing contractor on the Papua New Guinea Incentive Fund Project (APNGIF), delivered on behalf of the Australian Government Overseas Aid Program (AusAID) between 2000 and 2008.

Coffey managing director Roger Olds said that it was exciting to see two projects that truly represent Coffey’s vision, to be global specialists solving emerging challenges to improve the lives of communities, receiving these prestigious accolades.

“Most cities around the world are facing severe congestion due to rapid urbanisation and population growth. Coffey’s role in the Inner Northern Busway project was a fantastic opportunity to help address this issue in Australia’s fastest growing city, reducing traffic in the central business district, travel time and the number of cars on the road.”

The Inner Northern Busway - Queen Street to Upper Roma Street is used each day by more than 2,000 buses carrying 42,000 people, with projections to increase to 4,100 buses and 58,000 passengers per day by 2029. It helps reduce the city's overall carbon footprint, with annual savings of 1,496 tonnes of carbon dioxide expected by 2026.

The INB Hub Alliance also found ways to eliminate adverse impacts and contribute positively to the community. The team fully offset greenhouse gases, recycled or reused 98 per cent of waste, and helped reclaim Brisbane’s central business district for pedestrians and cyclists, freeing land for urban renewal, reinstatement and creation of new pedestrian areas.

Commenting on winning the Silver Award of Merit, Roger said: “The APNGIF project delivered a substantial amount of international aid funds that contributed to the development of social and physical infrastructure in Papua New Guinea, benefiting thousands of people. The funded projects delivered hospital wards, teachers’ houses, classrooms, libraries, clinics, university facilities, computer laboratories, markets, wells and water systems, roads and a bridge.”
