(2 March 2011, Melbourne, Victoria) Global professional services consultancy Coffey International Limited (“Coffey”) has been awarded an additional contract for information testing services on the M80 Ring Road Upgrade. Coffey Information was awarded the contract with Leighton Contractors, after providing similar services to BMD Constructions and Thiess Contractors on adjacent sections of the M80 Upgrade.

Leighton Contractors will manage the design and construction of two additional traffic lanes in each direction along 4.1 kilometres of existing freeway with associated bridge strengthening between Western Highway and Furlong Road.

Coffey Information global business development manager Matt Morley said it was a key transport project for Victoria and strengthens the relationship between Coffey, Leighton Contractors and ultimately VicRoads.

“This work will further cement Coffey Information’s relationship with Leighton Contractors who, as part of the Leighton Group, continue to be a priority client for us.

“With significant growth in the demand for transport infrastructure in Victoria’s cities and regional centres, this continues to position us in the industry as the market leader in quality information testing and services,” he said.

Service line manager Daniel Pearce said it was great to be recognised by Leighton Contractors for the work already achieved on earlier sections of the M80 Upgrade.

“This acknowledges our hard work and focus on creating client value by providing timely, quality outcomes for both Thiess and BMD Constructions on separate sections of the M80 Ring Road Upgrade works,” he said.

Coffey Information’s global leader Michael Renehan said the M80 Upgrade will have significant local benefits by improving safety and increasing capacity for drivers.

Western Ring Road Upgrade Project

The 28km long Western Ring Road extends from the junction of the Princes and West Gate Freeways, Laverton to Sydney Road (Hume Highway) Fawkner. The Western Ring Road is part of the M80 which also incorporates the 10km long Metropolitan Ring Road. The Western Ring Road carries up to 142,000 vehicles per day with up to 16% commercial vehicles. Construction to upgrade the Western Ring Road between the Tullamarine Freeway and Sydney Road commenced in December 2009 and is expected to be completed in 2013. Current works include:

  • Widening to three lanes in each direction and a fourth lane between some interchanges to provide for traffic entering the freeway at one interchange and exiting at the next;
  • Intelligent Transport Systems to manage traffic flow; and
  • Reconfigured freeway interchanges and ramps where required.

First stage of works on the Western Highway to Sunshine Avenue section (Furlong Road to Sunshine Avenue) was awarded to BMD Constructions Pty Ltd on 13 May 2010. Major works on this section commenced in late September 2010 and included two extra lanes in both directions as well as widening of the bridge over Furlong Road. In October 2010, Leighton Contractors was awarded the contract to upgrade between Western Highway and Furlong Road.
