Specialists from Coffey Environments used the technology to inject more than 12,000 litres of chemical oxidant fluid, over one and a half days, at a Sydney retail petroleum site of a major client in the oil and gas sector. Previous injection efforts at the site’s groundwater aquifer had only delivered approximately 2,000 litres over a similar timeframe.
Coffey Environments global leader David Browne said: “We are excited to be leading the way in the introduction of this cutting edge technology in Australia. Our clients from the petrochemical industry will benefit from more efficient site remediation programs, reduced costs and timeframes to improve their environmental performance.”
Coffey Environments has signed a licensing agreement with leading North American company Wavefront Technology Solutions to access the Primawave technology to enhance its contaminated land remediation services. The environmental, social and safety performance consultancy is currently the sole licensed provider of the technology in the Asia Pacific region.
Primawave relies on a patented pulsed injection method to improve fluid distribution within the subsurface of a contaminated site. The technology enhances the delivery rate and distribution of the injected amendments up to five times faster, and increases the radius of influence, reducing the risk of chemical daylighting, a common problem in the injection of chemical amendments.
According to David Lam, senior principal at Coffey Environments contaminated land practice, this technology will greatly enhance chemical injection efficiency in a range of geological settings, reducing the overall costs and timeframes to achieve site remediation objectives.
“We are confident that this pulsed injection method will improve the efficiency of chemical amendment injection, which has been widely recognised as a groundwater remediation technology of choice, in many circumstances, and is often a more sustainable option.
“The client deemed the overall results to be very successful and it is anticipated that project planning for future site work undertaken by Coffey Environments will incorporate Primawave technology into the basis of design,” concluded David.
