Coffey awarded US$40 million funding increase for Tatweer international development project in Iraq

(6 October 2009) Global professional services consultancy Coffey International Limited (“Coffey”) today announced that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded Coffey a US$40 million funding increase within the contract for the Tatweer Project in Iraq.

Coffey is managing the Tatweer Project, part of the United States Government’s program to rebuild a strong Iraqi civil service. This increases total funding for the project to its ceiling of US$340 million.

The Tatweer Project aims to rebuild administrative capacity of key ministries within the Iraqi Government, and to deliver services to the Iraqi people. The additional US$40 million contract will allow the project to be extended to all eighteen Iraqi provinces, ensuring that project successes obtained in Baghdad can continue at every level of the Iraqi state.

Project advisors will expand their work with ministers, mid and senior level staff to develop project management, human resources, information technology and financial management skills.

Tatweer is the largest US-funded public administration project since the Vietnam War and has become a model for similar projects in post-conflict regions around the world. The project is a vital part of improving administrative systems and planning and budgeting processes, which are in turn essential components in creating well-functioning public systems, such as health, education, law and governance.

Managing Director Roger Olds said: “I am delighted Coffey continues to play a vital role in improving the lives of Iraqis, a role we have been undertaking for 30 years.

“Our success with Tatweer also helps to create opportunities for Australian and international firms seeking to participate in the reconstruction of Iraq and grows the reputation Coffey has as a global provider of specialist knowledge solutions, particularly in difficult environments.”
