These contracts bring the total value of Coffey International Development’s current work to in excess of A$1.4 billion on 170 contracts in more than 80 countries.
And this parcel of contracts also follows a previous announcement that Coffey International Development subsidiary, STA, has secured a US$92.9 million contract to provide aircrew and maintenance training to the Saudi Arabian National Guard.
Managing director Roger Olds said that he was tremendously pleased to see Coffey International Development going from strength to strength.
“Coffey has vigorously pursued diversification across services, sectors and geographies. In the current business climate we are now seeing the wisdom of ensuring we have exposure to a number of sectors around the world and in particular our global development business.”
“The work we deliver via these new contracts will help improve governance and institutional capacity in Iraq, help fight corruption in Peru and assist USAID in Sudan. It is this work which goes to the heart of Coffey’s vision - global specialists solving emerging challenges to improve the lives of communities.”
Coffey International Development chief executive officer Glen Simpson said he was pleased to see the long-term vision for Coffey International Development being fulfilled.
“The acquisition of MSI in January this year provided Coffey International Development’s American business with the footprint, resources and critical mass to pursue and win major development contracts in new sectors and regions. Our business model is unique in that it provides for a mobile workforce of appropriate specialists from around the world delivered, to our clients but with local accountability. Clients get the best minds and experience available, combined with our local management to ensure projects are effectively delivered in partnership with our clients.”
Coffey International Development’s subsidiary, MSI, has won an 18-month, US$90 million contract extension on the USAID-funded Iraq National Capacity Development project (or Tatweer in Arabic), bringing total project funding to date to US$299 million. MSI has provided comprehensive assistance to critical Iraqi ministries and offices delivering services to the Iraqi people since 2006. Tatweer advisors interact daily with their ministerial colleagues in the executive offices of the Presidency Council, the Prime Minister's Office and Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, and the Ministries of Planning, Electricity, Oil, Agriculture, Municipalities and Public Works, Health, Water Resources, Justice, Migration and Human Rights.
MSI was also awarded an US$8.5m sub-contract to implement a legislative strengthening project in Iraq. The program is designed to improve the functioning of the Council of Representatives (COR) – the highest body of democratic institutions in Iraq. Initially, MSI was engaged to design the program and has since been sub-contracted by AECOM to implement activities.
Coffey International Development has more than 30 years’ experience working in Iraq on contracts for the UN, and the Iraqi, Australian, UK and US Governments. Today, Coffey International Development more than 250 staff in Iraq and, via the Tatweer project, more than 25,000 civil servants have been trained in core public management skills.
In Sudan, MSI is providing a facilitation role supporting USAID activities. The Sudan SUPPORT project was initially awarded to MSI in 2007 and the business has now received a US$22 million contract modification. The project provides critical assistance to USAID/Sudan in its program office functions, communications services, and limited logistical assistance.
In October, MSI was also awarded a two-year, US$20 million project to fight corruption in Peru under the Millennium Challenge Corporation Threshold Agreement between the U.S. and Peru. Activities will focus on working with the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to improve disciplinary oversight of judges and police; working with the Controller General’s office to improve efficiency and oversight; and helping to strengthen processes of internal and external control. The project will also focus on devising national awareness and information campaigns in collaboration with the Government of Peru and the Ombudsman’s office.
Coffey International Development delivers aid and development programmes on behalf of governments, multilateral agencies and private donor organisations in more than 80 countries and has 1,350 employees.
