(2 May 2011) The Ballina Bypass Alliance, a joint partnership between the RTA, Leighton Contractors, AECOM, SMEC and Coffey Geotechnics, won the Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System (Private Sector) category at the Safe Work Australia Awards.

1.7 million hours of work between September 2007 and June 2010 were recorded on the Ballina Bypass with no lost-time injuries. The Ballina Bypass employs around 230 people and stretches 12 kilometers. The large construction site involved heavy trucks, large equipment, major bridge building, blasting, digging, and lifting near highway traffic. The Alliance’s aim was to have no injuries throughout the project.

General Manager of WorkCover's Work Health and Safety Division, John Watson, said the recognition was well deserved.

“A safe workplace is a competitive workplace,” he said.

“Ballina Bypass Alliance has made safety a priority and the project has seen significant benefits as a result.”
