Britomart Development Opens in Auckland
(18 May 2011) The final touches have been made on a prestigious new office building in Auckland’s revitalised Britomart precinct. The development was completed on time on 1 April 2011, and consists of two ten-level towers and an additional two floors which link the towers at the upper Eastern end.
The North Tower is anchored by Ernst & Young and Southern Cross Medical Care, while Westpac will tenant the South Tower, with link bridges across to their tenancy in the adjacent Charter House development for which Coffey also provided the lead project management services.
Coffey Projects has been project managing this significant development for Cooper and Company over the last four years. They have taken the project from concept design right through to completion – on time and within budget. Senior Project Manager Steve Wilson said the development had many logistical challenges to overcome.
“Being situated in close proximity to heritage buildings and directly above an operational railway station, the team overcame many constraints to create a world-class space show casing environmental best-practice in commercial design.”
The East Complex was awarded a Five-Star design rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council, confirming the development's status as a leading edge environmental building.
Designed by international award-winning architects Johnson Pilton Walker, the building includes a striking central atrium space which is open to the transparent ETFE roof ten stories above and features two living ‘green walls’ which flank the Eastern and Western ends of the space.
The office fit-outs of the upper floors are complete and staffs have already begun moving into their new workplaces. The next couple of months will also see the ground floor retail businesses of both buildings begin to open their doors. Most will front the spectacular central Atrium space which also provides public linkages into the Britomart Train station below. Retail tenancies include several high-end fashion and beauty stores, as well as an excellent new range of daytime eateries.
The commercial towers are located in Britomart – a vibrant shopping, entertainment and business precinct in the heart of downtown Auckland. Lying between the Waitemata Harbour and Auckland’s lower CBD, Britomart is a 6.5-hectare waterfront precinct of heritage and new buildings, regeneration sites and open spaces. With more than 200 companies set to occupy the area, the location is quickly becoming one of the most exciting places in New Zealand. Currently eighteen historic buildings are being restored alongside seven new buildings which are under development.
