Coffey Geotechnics uses a towed sidescan sonar fish, with onboard digitiser and recording system. A towed array allows fast coverage of large areas, or high resolution inspection of smaller areas.
Post processing of the data allows adjustment of gains, interactive picking of the targets, and measurement of features such as length and height. Once the seabed has been picked, slat range corrected images are created, allowing positions of targets to be calculated.
For larger sites adjacent lines of sidescan images can be merged together to produce a mosaic. The mosaic can then be exported as a geo-referenced TIFF image, suitable for reading into CAD systems and some GIS packages.
