Seismic Refraction Testing
Seismic refraction testing is accepted practice for many problems in geotechnical engineering. This non-destructive test uses a linear array of closely spaced detectors on the earth's surface to sense first arrival seismic waves travelling through the earth from seismic sources placed at various locations.
The data is digitally acquired, and computer processed and interpreted, to provide the subsurface distribution of seismic P-wave velocities and the locations of significant elastic interfaces.
Coffey Geotechnics offers an enhanced practice in seismic refraction field testing and interpretation together with quality assurance through computer seismic ray tracing and tomographic imaging.
Applications:
- bedrock mapping
- excavation and rippability assessment
- foundation conditions
- location of faults and shears
- materials assessment.
