Lawrence Hargrave Drive Alliance

Lawrence Hargrave Drive provides scenic views of the beautiful northern Illawarra coastline. Because of a long history of rock falls and embankment failure, the road had to be closed to the public.

RTA NSW chose an alliance contract to upgrade the road, as the project faced many technical challenges, as well as tight cost and time constraints. RTA, Barclay Mowlem, Coffey Geotechnics and Maunsell Australia formed the alliance. They were responsible for the investigation, option assessment, design and construction of the road upgrade.

The solution comprised the construction of two bridges to form a continuous 665-metre-long bridge. The bridges moved the road alignment eastwards towards the ocean, away from the rockfall zone and included a separate pedestrian and cycle path.

Our role included geotechnical investigations, analysis and design and construction support.

Industry has applauded the project, bestowing it with no less than seven awards of excellence.
